Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 12:25 PMI'm a southern Virginia swamp-stompin Djembe girl!
I danced the rhythms for years before I could unlock my heart, shoulders, arms, fingers to the skin of the goat.
There's a few local drumcircles me and my tribe used to drum with until the drama got too heavy to cut with a sweet rhythm, so we drum at pagan gathers, our own celebrations, and my and my man drum together at home as well.
Blessings, y'all!

Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Wed, March 28, 2007 - 11:36 AMMost of the time, I drum with djembes, but I also have a doumbek and a frame drum. I am also guilty (as someone else said) of drumming on the steering wheel of the car while sitting at traffic lights. :::grin:::
We have three recurring Drum Circles in the area where I live (northeastern Tennessee) and I try to attend these each month. I also drum at home, alone or with my guy, whenever the mood strikes me. Sometimes I play-along with music in the stereo, sometimes it is just my drum and I, or sometimes I take a drum outside and drum while looking up at Mother Moon -- that's the best!

I play Middle Eastern percussion (Tabla, Riq, Def, Zils, Bendir)
I also like Udu, Cajon, and Berimbau.
I love to play on stages for audiences, I also love to play my drum by myself at the edge of a lake, or at the ocean.

Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 8:03 AMWhat: DunDun, riq, frame, jello mold, PVC pipe, zill, washboard, folding chair. If I can hit it with a stick and make it go boom, clack, clang, thud, zing then it's fun, but using thimbles works too.
When: Not as much as I would like. Just moved and looking for drummers in the area.
Where: Triangle area of North Carolina -

Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Sat, May 12, 2007 - 12:00 PMwhenever and wherever I can get together with other people / womyn to drum... on Vancouver Island and Hornby Island. I play djembe but I also love the dun duns when I can find 'em.
Drum circles (one tomorrow, yay!) and with friends. I used to be in a percussion band (west african rhythms) for a few years, but now it's just for fun, though I'm percussion facilitator for the PWCA women's camps on Vancouver Island (pwcacamp.org). Drum circles every evening of camp (a week), yum...
Over the winter I jammed with a group of musicians playing all sorts of electric instruments, with me on djembe (and occasionally bass). Love that!
Would definitely like to drum more, and that's part of why I moved to Vancouver Island recently.

Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Sat, May 26, 2007 - 7:48 AMGood questions!
I'm in Texas at this moment but I live in Oakland CA. I mostly drum on the Ngoma (a Congolese drum) and the Conga. I drum as often as I can in groups and take two classes a week, one in Congolese music and one in Afro-Cuban. I love them both and get a lot of pleasure from seeing the connections in the music.
i went to jazz camp last year and took all sessions on the Conga and Afro-Cuban song. Carolyn Brandy and John Santos were the teachers. l It was great and I'm going again this year.
Last year Carolyn and I started the Born to Drum Women's Drum Camp, WOW! It was just such an amazing experience, beyond our wildest hopes for artistic success. So we're doing it again this year.
For the past 7 years or so I've been going to Congolese Dance and Drum camp. Besides the two drum classes every day we have an opportunity to drum for dance classes at the side of master drummers from the Congo. Another amazing experience.
Vicki Noble does healing circles and I've been fortunate to drum for these and for other similar events. It is an incredible spiritual experience.
Our Congolese drum class has started a "band" , Nlolo Batumbu, and we play for fund-raisers and friends in the SF Bay area. Performing adds a whole new dimension to the drumming for me.
Thanks for your questions!
Drum on!
Peace,
Jackie

Re: With What/When/Where do YOU drum?
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 6:31 PMHello! I just started drumming and can't figure out how I ever lived without it!
I drum with a West African-style djembe group every week & will be joining a local Pagan drumming circle (tomorrow yay!) that meets once a month. It's not nearly enough! I would love to drum more. I still have small ones at home so I try to drum very 'quietly' while they nap. (my 1 year old drums on a tiny little djembe...soo cute!)
I go to the country pretty often and am looking forward to bring my djembe and drumming lakeside.
I'm in Montreal and would love to find drumming/fire circles in town or in surrounding areas (am willing to travel!) -
